Gracie, a 5-year-old feline, was found in pain in the backyard of a Glen Cove home, on Taft Place, this week, police said, and the subsequent MRI and CT scan showed that she had been shot twice.

According to police, a woman heard Gracie crying in pain outside her home at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1, where she found the cat dragging her hindquarters, unable to walk.

The woman notified a nearby neighbor who was a veterinarian, who brought Gracie to her practice for evaluation and treatment, where it was determined she had been shot in the spine and abdomen.

Police noted that the cat’s owners were notified of the injury after the veterinarian discovered that it was chipped with the owner’s information.

“The cat’s owners state that Gracie is very friendly to everyone in the neighborhood. In fact, the cat would amuse the neighbors when it would follow her owners whenever they took their dog out for a walk," police said.

Investigators said that the shooting most likely happened between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. on June 1 on Taft Place or Sherwood Road in Glen Cove.

On Thursday, June 3, police in Glen Cove offered an update advising that Gracie has undergone successful surgery, and the fragments recovered were from a pellet gun, not a .22 caliber pistol. Gracie is currently in recovery.

A GoFundMe fundraising campaign to help offset Gracie’s medical bills has been started that garnered more than $15,000 in a few days. Anyone interested in donating can do so here

“Gracie survived the surgery and the doctor said it as went as it could have,” her owners said. “Gracie may never urinate on her own and will continue to need help, even physical therapy. She may never walk again but we are hopeful that she will be well enough to get herself around.

“She’s now in need of extensive home care. Gracie is not out of the woods but we are thankful to the surgeons who treated her and the outpour of support from the community.”

Anyone with information regarding the shooting has been asked to contact the Glen Cove Police Department at (516) 676-1002 or the Nassau County SPCA by calling 516-THE-SPCA.
